Why floating docks make sense on BC water.

An honest look at why modular floating systems have replaced fixed docks on most new BC projects — and where they still don't make sense.

Not every dock should be a floating dock. On some sites, a piled or crib dock is genuinely the better call. But for most residential, commercial, and industrial projects on BC water, modular floating systems have become the default — and for good reasons that are worth understanding before you commit to either direction.

Where floating docks make sense.

Water levels change. A floating dock doesn't fight that.

BC lakes and coastal sites see significant water-level change across the seasons. Interior lakes rise and fall with freshet and drawdown; coastal sites swing with every tide. A floating dock rises and falls with the water — no seasonal damage, no annual adjustments, no pilings failing under unexpected loads.

Built for cold-weather conditions.

Rotomolded polyethylene is designed for freeze-thaw cycles and performs well in cold climates. Some BC owners leave EZ Dock systems in the water through winter; others pull them out each fall. EZ Dock makes a hitch-and-wheel accessory that makes residential systems easy to roll in and out, so either approach is practical. What works best depends on your lake, your site, and your preference.

Lower maintenance over the long term.

Nothing to paint. Nothing to seal. No wood to rot or metal to rust. The maintenance program is rinsing the dock surface once a season and periodically checking anchoring hardware. Over the lifespan of a floating system, the maintenance savings typically exceed the price difference at purchase.

Modular, so the dock can grow with how you use the water.

Start with a basic swim platform. Add a PWC port two seasons later. Extend the walkway for boat access when the kids get older. Floating systems are configured from standardized components, which means expansion doesn't require replacing what you've already built.

Environmentally lower-impact installation.

Floating systems anchor with augers, deadweight, or stiff-arm brackets — not driven pilings. On many BC sites, especially fish-bearing waters or First Nations consultation areas, the lower site disturbance can simplify permitting and approvals.

When fixed docks can be the right choice.

Floating systems fit most BC waterfronts, but there are sites where a fixed or piled dock is worth considering — particularly very shallow sites with hard substrate that complicate floating-dock anchoring, or properties with specific aesthetic or historic requirements.
